My favorite childrens author is Theodor Geisel
I absolutely love Dr. Seuss because of his interesting characters and great morals.
Thedor Seuss Geisel- AKA Dr. Seuss- was born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He attended Dartmouth
College as a teenager and later went onto Oxford University in England. After being bored with his studies, he decided to
tour Europe instead of attend school, and when he returned to the United States, he bagan to pursue a career as a cartoonist. He
worked for various newspapers and magazines before he published his first childrens book To Think That I saw it on
Mulberry Street (which was rejected 27 times before it finally got published!)
Though Dr. Seuss wrote many memorable books, The Cat in the Hat was the book that took his career
to new heights, and came about in a very interesting way. The company Houghton Mifflin asked Theodor to write and illustrate
a children's book that had only 223 new readers vocabulary words. After the release of this book, Dr. Seuss started to
be recognized as a childrens literature legend.
Dr. Seuss, who was not really a Dr. "......has paid untold millions of house calls to welcoming children
and their greatful parents" says Clifton Fadiman in the preface of Six by Suess. Dr. Suess never had any children of his own
said "You make 'em- I amuse 'em."
Theodore Seuss Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 books durning his lifetime. They have been
translated into over 15 different languages and has sold over 200 million copies. His books have been the basis for numerous
television specials, full length films, and a broadway musical.
He was awarded two Emmy's, two Academy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer
Prize. Many academic lesson plans are written to encompass his books and many schools across the world celebrate Dr.
Suess Day on March 2nd. His work continues to be read by chilren all over the world and lives in many of the
hearts of adults, including mine! Here is a list of books written by Dr. Seuss.
